The Fort at Loudoun was originally garrisoned by a whitesmith named Thomas Smith, according to the book, The Statutes at Large of South Carolina: Acts from 1752 to 1786.  In addition to the allowance of 129 pounds sterling as the provincial gunsmith, he received an additional allowance of 120 pounds Sterling for nine months of service as the whitesmith. Serving as a private and having the extra allowance he was one of the wealthier men in the fort.  Another reason everyone wants to be a whitesmith!
